First Surgeries By: Frances M. McCrory-Meservy 1944-1950

Recently, my Mom made the comment that I was healthy when I was a child. I reminded her that I had a couple of surgeries when I was very young. I added, "All my life Satan keeps trying to kill me but God keeps sending Angels to catch me." Mom remembered back when I was about a year old and said I was right.

She told me that when I was not quite a year old (1944) I became really sick and she took me to Dr. McWright. He said I had Gangrene of the stomach, gave me something and I threw up the foulest green stuff Mom ever saw. He said something I ate got stuck and turned to gangrene.

I had my first surgery when I was 5 ½ (1949). Dr. McWright removed my tonsils but not my adenoids. He felt that adenoids protected against Polio.

During the summer, when I was 6 (1949), I started to complain of a tummy ache. I would sit with my knees pulled up to my chest to ease the pain. Mom took me to the doctor and he put me in St. Elizabeth’s Hospital in Beaumont, TX. I had surgery that evening. My appendix burst during surgery.

During surgery, I felt like I was falling through a tunnel and it sounded like bees were chasing me. I was in a ward with several other children for two weeks.

That's when I got my first paper dolls.  My Aunt Margaret & cousin Marie brought them to me while I was in the hospital.

1 Sam 2:9 He will guard the feet of His saints, But the wicked shall be silent in darkness. "For by strength no man shall prevail.

Psa 116:8-9 For You have delivered my soul from death, My eyes from tears, And my feet from falling. I will walk before the LORD In the land of the living.
