Robert McCrory of Spartanburg SC
There has been a great deal of confusion and misinformation
with the number of Robert McCrorys found in NC, SC, TN and AL.
There is a Robert McCrory (b. 1760) s/o Thomas McCrory and Hannah
Crawford. This Robert was a brother to James (1758-1840), Hugh
and Thomas (others)--all three RW soldiers. This Robert d. in TN
c1818 (see #317). There is also another Robert from this
Thomas/Hannah line who lived in Pickens Co., AL. James
(1758-1840)of Pickens Co., AL lived in this Robert's household.
Descendants debate whether or not this Robert was the son of
James or the son of his brother Robert (1760-1818). James also
had a son Robert (1800-1870).
There is yet another Robert McCrory (b.c1760), s/o Thomas McCrory
and Jeney (Janey/Janie)--early Presbyterian settlers who lived
along the 3 branches of the Tyger River in Spartanburg Co., SC.
This Robert mar. Martha Penny,d/o Thomas and Sarah Penny of
Spartanburg. Robert had a son Robert, Jr. (c1787-92) who married
Martha "Patsy" Wood, d/o John Wood and Maiden Seay of
Spartanburg. This Robert, Jr. and his wife removed to
DeKalb/Clayton Cos., GA area c1830-40. Family tradition states
that Robert was a cobbler in Forrest Park, Clayton Co., GA. The
History of Clayton Co., GA 1821-1983 states, "Robert McCrory's
family sailed from Ireland in the late 1700s and settled in VA
later migrating to SC and from there to GA."
I descend from Robert McCrory, Jr. and wife Martha "Patsy" Wood
through their daughter, Jane Maiden McCrory, b. 3 Oct. 1826,
Spartanburg Co., SC; d. 26 Aug. 1893, Carroll Co., GA; mar. 23
Apr. 1843, Dekalb Co., GA to James Monroe Green. Jane's siblings
include: Thomas Penn(y?)McCrory, Missouri McCrory(?), Rachel
Amanda McCrory, Sarah Caroline McCrory, Elizabeth McCrory, Emily
McCrory, and John McCrory--perhaps others. Some of these siblings
moved to the St. Claire Co., AL area.
The McCrory family of Spartanburg Co., SC is NOT directly
connected to the Thomas/Hannah (Crawford) McCrory line of NC, TN,
AL.
