The McCrorys in John Osborn's diary (Mary-John's sister in law, Hugh-store owner, William-school teacher, Andrew & Thomas II-military) are from NC.
Old man Thomas McCrory (lives on Camp Creek) & son Hugh (Thomas Sr. - Mary's father) lives close by are close enough to Lancaster SC that they are within walking distance of the court house (half a days walk) according to the diary.
Evidently Lancaster was within walking distance to the Waxhaw river and John Osborn's father's house in NC (or maybe his dad lived in SC). Hugh McCrory evidently lived on the Waxhaw.

Subject: My take on the McCrorys in NC/SC
It took me forever to sort out all of the Hugh and Thomas McCrorys in NC and SC. There were like 4 of each living in the Carolinas from abt 1790 to 1810. I know in N.C.sons (of Capt Thomas) John, Hugh and William lived in Mecklenburg NC until or before 1810 when they all went to TN. Sisters Esther and Elizabeth also ended up in Hickman Co. TN. Mother Hannah supposedly moved to Mecklenburg and remarried after the Capt was killed in the war and she probably died there but I've not found proof of that yet. William also stayed behind and died in 1819.
In NC one Hugh was an orphan and moved with his brothers William and Issac to Greene Co AL. Most of Capt. Thomas' sons moved from Guilford to Mecklenburg NC after the Rev War and then to TN. I think Jas stayed in Guildford and then went to Sumter Co TN where he was granted mucho land. The other land grants seemed to be mostly in what was originally Davidson Co. and is now Williamson, Hickman TN etc etc.
Our Thomas was granted land in Lancaster SC in 1772 so he must have been born abt 1750 or earlier. He stayed in Lancaster the duration and all of his sons were born and raised there. Now, our Thomas also had sons named William, Hugh and John which has caused mucho confusion. There was also a son named Thomas but he was not mentioned in his father's will in 1823 and the only reference to him is in John Osborn's diary referring to his return from the new countries in 1800 after a 4 year absence which would make him the oldest and probably born in or abt 1775.. He is described as the brother of Mary, our Thomas' daughter who is married to the diary writer's brother. The other sons didn't leave until 1832 when John and Hugh moved their families to Butler Co AL.
I know from the diary and documents I've found that the families knew each other. I've found 2 where "Thomas of Lancaster" was involved as executor and as a witness with John Foster in NC. John Foster, Peter Rape, Hugh McCrory, Hugh Rogers and William McCrory appear to have been drinking buddies or at least good friends in NC and our McCrorys knew them..
Capt. Thomas' father is supposed to be named Hugh in Ireland and some think that he had a brother named William that could possibly be our Thomas' father. This is total speculation and I'm not sure how it can be proved. I've thought of hiring a genealogist in Antrim Ireland to research it for us but haven't gotten the nerve up to do so yet. Some of the so called "professional genealogists" here haven't impressed me terribly and I don't want to waste my money.
Are you decended from James? I am only very distantly related to him, not a direct descendant. Now, additions, questions or changes or whatever would be appreciated.
